Besides jail, there are many other penalties for failing to pay your court ordered support in PA.

By Attorney Jeffrey B. Engle, Support Attorney, Harrisburg, PA

Many obligors (those who owe support) are usually unaware of the drastic penalties that await them for failing to pay support.  In addition to court imposed sanctions, such as 6 months of work release and $1,000 in fines, fees and court costs, there are other penalties.

Here is a list of things that can happen to you for non-payment of child and/or spousal support:

  • Suspension of your driver's license- this can occur to you whether your a PA driver or an out-of-state driver.  Many states have reciprocity agreements that allow PA to suspend your state's issued license.  (See blog article for more on this subject).
  • Interception of your federal/state tax returns;
  • Liens placed on your real estate;
  • Freezing your bank accounts;
  • Reporting your non-payment to the three credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion);
  • Denial or revocation of your passport;
  • Interception of lottery winnings;
  • Suspension of your hunting/fishing or boating licenses.

If you have received notification from the domestic relations enforcement office about your failure to pay, please take it seriously.  The consequences for non-payment are severe.  The best thing you can do is to not ignore the notice and talk to the enforcement unit about setting up a payment schedule or making a lump sum payment.
